2 Beers are Better Than 1
ISSUE #8
Happy Wednesday everyone!
So I need to make a correction. It was pointed out I missed updating the football score on Monday’s email. I still had the previous weeks semi-final results in! 🤦♂️
So a big congratulations to the Westgate Tigers for beating St. Pat’s 44-14 this past Saturday to win the local championship!
Also I will be updating the local sports to include more in the coming weeks. Seems to be a popular section and I want to ensure equitable coverage for as many as possible!
In todays issues we cover:
Downtown parking issues 🚗
2 beers are better than 1 🍺
800km of insanity 🚴♂️
Marathon drug bust 👮♀️
Nurse Practitioner week 😷
Condemned bridge
Things to do this week (big ass list!)
House of the day - Golf course living 🏡
FREE hot sauce & $20 gift card of your choice!

Parking Woes Continue
Perhaps no facet of municipal Thunder Bay life is as aggreived as anything to do with the roads in Thunder Bay.
And now in the cross-hairs (and basically any time anything wants to be put anywhere that isn’t in a massive field), is parking!
Specifically downtown parking.
Hyper specifically, the new rates and enforcement times with downtown parking.
A while back the city changed when they would be charging you to park your vehicle downtown (and other places, like the marina, which was as well received as a punch to the face).
Allegedly it’s to help ease budget shortfalls congestion with long term parking.
Well now restaurants are raising the alarm that the new plan is having a detrimential impact on their business.
‘Ghost town’ was one way the downtown cores were described in the evenings.
As far as the City is concenred, well all had out chance to voice our opinions. And now they will collect data and review again in 2026.

1 Beer is Good, 2 Are Better
One of Thunder Bay’s more recent best-known exports is partnering with a southen Ontario company.
Sleeping Giant Brewing has signed a letter of intent to merge with Newark Brewing Company Ltd of Beamsville.
The two businesses will continue to operate independently, but will now focus their efforts jointly on distribution, sales, and marketing.
For the MBAers in the crowd, Sleeping Giant Brewery CEO Drea Mulligan said this will allow SGBC to create synergies and to scale and grow beyond their current sales rate.
Whenever I hit up southern Ontario, SGBC is one of the brands that is recognized as coming from Thunder Bay. So it’s great to hear that it will continue as a Tbay mainstay, and if anything, grow in awareness and sales.
Absolutley anything that helps a local business grow is welcome.
I’ll cheers to that! 🍻
Exercise
800km Insanity
Have you ever wanted to cycle across most of an African country?
No?
Me neither.
But Thunder Bayer Dave Campbell sure did!
He recently completed an 800km journey through the Western Cape of South Africa.
It was called the Rhino Run - which that alone would scare most people away.
The journey was a group activity (thankfully), but was not without some pretty extreme situations. Dave was one of 11 riders (4 from Canada, the rest Australian) plus two guides.
Not only was the terrain challenging (mountain passes), but the weather was also determined to beat them down with temperaturs of 38C and no wind.
I’m glad he made it back safe and sound (and avoided the baboons at the behest of his tour guides).
A series of pictures are available in the link below. It certainly did look beautiful.
Crime
Marathon Drug Bust
Three residents were arrested late last week after OPP raided a Marathon home.
During the raid OPP siezed suspected methamphetamine, cocaine, unauthorized guns, and unmarked cigarettes.
Arrested was a 40 year-old man, a 64 year-old man, and a 64 year-old woman.
Good! Get that sh*t off our streets.
Hospital Stuff
Nurse Practitioner Week
The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre would like to remind you that this is the annual Nurse Practitioner Week.
Here in Thunder Bay, NP’s offer a comprehensive range of services, including ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic tests; diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions; prescribing medications and treatments; and managing overall patient care.
They also play important roles in various hospital functions including:
Cancer management
Surgical services
Cardiology
The Regional stroke srogram
Hospitalist program
Nurse-led outrach team
So if you know an NP, give them a hug (with permission of course).
Otherwise, a simple thank you also goes a long way! (and click below to learn more about what NPs do).

Bridge Failure
Ginoogaming First Nation has declared a state of emergency.
The bridge leading to their community has been closed to traffic after WSP Engineering inspected it last week and deemed it unfit.
It doesn’t cut off the community entirely from the rest of the province, as there is a bush road that gives access back to the highway.
The issue, however, is that the bushroad is a) a 1 hour trip on an unmaintained road and; b) no emergency services can use that road, essentially cutting the community off from fire and ambulance services.
This has been a known impending issue for a while. The bridge is over 70 years old.
The community has been trying to get the different levels of government engaged to assist with a permanent solution, but so far no luck.
A temporary solution should be up in a few weeks.
