Sleeping Giant Brewing Partners with United Way
Sleeping Giant Brewing is looking to SMASH poverty with the United Way.
The local brewery has entered a three-year partnership with the United Way, to raise $30,000.
The highlight, and tool for fundraising, is the creation of a brand new beer specifically for the United Way.
Entitled, Better is Possible, the brew is a lager, with the acronym SMASH standing for Single Malt and Single Hop.
Hence SMASH Poverty.
The lager, which is branded as light and easy drinking, can be picked up from Sleeping Giants retail store, with proceeds from sales going towards the fundraising effort.

Wednesday’s poll asked if you thought NWO needed more doctors. Well, 97% of you said yes we do! Let’s see what the future brings….

Education
Con College Teams Up For Skateboarding
Confederation College and Cinema 5 Skatepark want to make skateboarding more accessible.
(And no, skateboarding is not a pathway to the Devil, as has sometimes been bemoaned by certain age groups…)
The collab will see the college’s Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering Technology and Development Services Worker programs work with the skatepark to develop a bracket for skateboards that allow for the use of a crane or crutch.
Prototypes were recently tested after they were created using 3D printing.
The plan is to have the students come up with several designs, test them in real-world scenarios, determine which hold up the best, and then recreate them with more advanced materials.
Everything about this story is really cool.
Infrastructure
Water Main Break Continues to Befuddle
Over the weekend, a water main broke in the area of Fort William Road and First Avenue.
Well, city crews are still having a hard time finding the source of the leak. Which has flooded First Avenue, parts of Ontario Steet and the area around Roots Community Food Centre and Moose Hall.
Now I definitely don’t know anything about anything, but, is it really that hard to see where a metric annoying-ton of water is escaping a pipe?
The city had to alter traffic flows yesterday to account for the election as a polling station is in the area.
There is no timeline for a fix, but rest assured, they will continue to search for the source!
Crime
Airport Theft Recovered
A bag stolen from the arrival carousel at Thunder Bay Aiport has been recovered.
The piece of luggage, which was one of three from a couple arriving from Ottawa, was taken from the carousel last week.
A few hours later, the owners of the bag received a call from a resident of a local shelter, who claimed they had found the bag at a bus stop and were requesting a reward for locating it.
🤨
Ultimately, the owners got the bag back without paying, but there were two pairs of shoes missing.
For the airports part, they say this was an isolated incident, but they will be working with their security contractor to enhance security around the carousels.
Sports
Fighting Off the Warmth
I’m sure the organizers of the Sleeping Giant Loppet feel like they just can’t catch a break.
After having to cancel the event last year due to a lack of snow, this year was looking decent with a fair amount of snow and cold weather.
And then this week happened with +5C weather for a couple of days.
Despite the best efforts of a cranky Mother Nature this week, a check on the trails shows that they are hanging on and it should be a go still this weekend.
Oh and we are expecting upwards of 25cm of snow by the time this launches.
So hopefully they can have a great event and return to the time-honoured tradition of actually hosting winter sporting events during winter.

1,000lbs of Hockey Equipment
Cat Lake First Nation was on the receiving end of over a thousand pounds of new hockey sticks, skates, helmets, gloves, pads, and more.
The 1,300lb donation came from WestJet for the Mikinakoos Children’s Fund.
WestJet’s donation is aimed at making sports accessible for Indigenous youth.
The donations were collected from the Milton and Oakville hockey communities.
Many of the kids have never played hockey before because of a lack of access. The donation dovetails nicely with the community’s effort to organize a hockey camp for the kids.
WestJet helped pull the donation of supplies together with supporters Hope Arero and Canadian Tire, and logistical partner North Star Air.
