Circle K Loses $200K Due to Crime

Circle K seems to be a bit of a canary in the coal mine when it comes to the crime situation in Thunder Bay.

Consider this: the location at Arthur and Franklin Streets has seen the most loss from crime of any Circle K location between Thunder Bay and North Bay.

Even worse, the five stores in the Circle K stable that have experienced the most loses are all in Thunder Bay and total almost $220,000 in 2024.

It’s death by a thousand cuts. Because most of the crimes are so small in amount at the time, police don’t come unless someone has been injured.

Since 2021 Circle K as a company has spent $600,000 in security, and Thunder Bay is the only city in which they do business where security is needed on a daily basis.

For their part Thunder Bay Police acknowledge the problem and are trying to work with Circle K to figure out solutions.

Health Care

Bedbugs at the Regional

A new mother of twins has reported being bitten by bed bugs while staying in a parenting room for a few nights.

The hospital has recognized that over the past 12 months there have been a few isolated incidents of bed bugs.

In every case the regional has taken action as needed, including hiring professional exterminators when necessary.

Bed bugs are not harmful to humans as they do not transmit diseases.

However, they can cause itchy bites, sleep disturbances, and stress. It's also important to note that bed bugs can survive for several months in things like luggage, blankets and clothing.

When patients come into the hospital they may inadvertently bring bed bugs with them.

Bed bugs are not due to uncleanliness and While some people may judge individuals or businesses for having bed bugs, it is important to remember that anyone can bring in bed bugs.  it is vital to take action to prevent and address them.

City Council

Shelter Site Reconsidered… Again…

The merry-go-round that is Council trying to determine where to put the temporary homeless shelter continues to spin.

Back on April 7 city council selected a site on Cumberland St N to help support and temporarily house the city’s homeless population.

However, instead of ratifying that decision this past Monday, council has now punted it back to administration to examine the Kam River Heritage Park as a potential location.

A report is now due back on April 28.

In the mean time the homeless will keep fending for themselves, and concerned citizens will voice their opinions on every spot selected.

At this point, hopefully a decision is made shortly so we can all move on and get with the helping.

Crime

Home Invasion Arrest Made

If you spend any time watching TikTok you might stumble across a number of accounts that share home video security footage of well-to-do neighbourhoods in southern Ontario where masked intruders break through glass and doors to enter homes in the middle of the night.

Well, someone here experience that horror first hand.

Back towards the end of March a woman was awoken to loud bangs coming from her back deck.

She got up to look and found a man had pulled the screen door from her patio deck and proceeded to try and kick in her door.

The intruder failed to gain access and left.

Thunder Bay Police have now arrested a 21 year-old city resident for the event.

(Editorial comment: I would suggest spending some time with the upcoming federal election research crime rates, bail, house arrest, and sentencing rules currently in place that allow criminals to reoffend with near impunity and our law enforcement handcuffed to make a difference.)

Could be a worthwhile election issue to help make your decision on (see Circle K story above).

Mining

Ring of Fire Strategic Area of Importance

The provincial government plans to introduce legislation that allows it to designate areas containing critical mineral deposits as regions of strategic importance.

The ring of fire is one such area.

The goal is to significantly streamline permitting and approvals.

The province has also said its constitutional duty to consult First Nations will be met.

Alongside the mining, the province also wants to focus on refining these minerals in Ontario, so they aren’t shipped elsewhere to be generated into their final products.

Indigenous News

Starlink Cancellation Causes Problems

During the furor of the tariff chest puffing, the province of Ontario cancelled its contract with Starlink as a response to Elon Musks involvement in the new Trump administration.

Unfortunately there isn’t an alternative ready to go instead.

Now Indigenous legal advocates in NWO are sounding the alarm, citing concerns with people being able to access legal service in remote First Nations.

And it’s not just legal services. Many Indigenous people rely on Ontario Telehealth Network, and require stable internet to be able to connect remotely to their virtual medical appointments.
