Conservatives Announce Costed Platform

Pierre Poilievre has announced the Conservatives’ costed platform.

The topline highlight is an estimated $75 billion in tax cuts and $35 billion in new programs over the next four years.

Additional details for your consideration include:

  • $20 billion in revenue from counter-US tariffs

  • Savings will come from scrapping programs such as clean electricity regulations, mandatory Electric Vehicle sales targets

  • Elimination of the carbon tax for both industry and residents

  • Cutting the Liberal deficit by 70% by cutting back on bureaucracy, consultants (which would save $10 billion), foreign aid to dictators and terrorists

  • Cut the lowest personal income tax rate from 15% to 12.75% - meaning the average Canadian worker earning $57,000 will save $900

  • $12.8 billion in new revenue from increased home building to the tune of an additional 2.3 million homes

  • Save $1 billion by repealing the Impact Assessment Act

  • Allows Canadians to contribute an extra $5,000 a year to TFSA’s

  • Meet NATO’s commitment to defence spending by adding $17 billion in spending between 2025-2029

  • Drug treatment programs for 50,000 people

  • Pass a Taxpayer Protection Act, which would ban new or higher federal taxes without asking taxpayers first in a referendum

Vet School Moving Forward

Lakehead University says it will soon start accepting proposals for the construction of a new veterinarian training facility.

The goal is to begin work this summer.

Recruitment is underway for the first cohort of students in collaboration with the University of Guelph.

The program can’t come too soon, as there is a chronic shortage of vets in Thunder Bay and across NWO.

The province supports the program with an investment of almost $15 million.

The city’s CEDC is kicking in $500,000, and LU will fundraise for additional monies as well.

Voting

Record-Setting Advanced Voting

I’m not sure what it means or might portend for the outcome, but Canadians set a record for this election.

7.3 million of us voted during the advanced polls.

When you look at the last election, there were 5.8 million advanced voters, 25% less than this year.

Friday saw a single-day record set with 2 million people voting.

Hopefully, this means we will set an overall voter turnout record this election. We need as much engagement as possible.

Crime

Don’t Try To Shoot Down TPS Drones

A 54-year-old Thunder Bay man has been charged after attempting to shoot down a Thunder Bay Police Service drone with fireworks.

This past Sunday, officers were using the drone to search for a missing person.

The resident in question approached police and voiced concerns about the drone. Despite being assured it was the police’s and being used to locate a person, the individual was dissatisfied.

He set up a series of fireworks and began firing them towards the drone.

Police were able to avoid the projectiles and quickly arrested the man.

The accused was eventually released with a future court date.

Youth

Province Gives Money for Local Youth Programs

The province is providing financial assistance for two youth programs.

Magnus Theatre and North McIntyre Recreation Centre both received funding to grow their youth programs.

Magnus will receive $295,200 over three years to boost its young audiences’ school tour program.

The program is designed to help bring theatre and live theatre to communities around the north.

The North McIntyre Rec Centre will receive $166,300 over two years for new youth programming.

With the funding, the plan is to hire staff who will focus on creating school-age children’s programming.

Evacuees Will Be Able to Vote

Voters from Neskantaga First Nation, who were evacuated less than two weeks before the election, will have the chance to cast a ballot.

Elections Canada is rushing to get polling stations set up for the evacuees in Thunder Bay.

Evacated community members had until 6pm yesterday to vote by special ballot at the Thunder Bay-Rainy River Elections Canada office.

On election day, they will be able to vote at the Valhalla Inn.

Members were evacuated on April 16 following the closure of their only medical facility.
