ISSUE #65

Good morning,

Welcome to another week!

There were some spicy comments on Friday’s poll asking if Carney would do a good job as PM. I love the interaction and passion!

Keep it coming!

LU Students Protest Big Banks

Students at Lakehead University are calling on the school to end its relationship, sponsorship, and contracts with Canada’s big five banks.

The issue is that the banks invest heavily in fossil fuels (that’s going to be a tough one…).

There are two main issues the students are protesting.

The first is the use of Indigenous lands without consent or agreement.

The second is the impact of global warming on the future of everyone, especially the younger generation.

Last week a dozen students met to watch the documentary, Yintah, which discusses the 14-year resistance of the Wet’suwet’en to having pipelines built on their unceded territory.

So far I have found no comment from LU on whether or not they will take a reduction in money by cancelling any partnerships with the big banks in Canada.

Daily Poll

Today’s question is:

Should LU stop working with the big banks because they support fossil fuel companies?

$40 Million For Housing

The federal government has earmarked over $40 million to help build and repair 149 homes through eight housing projects in Northern Ontario.

The money comes via low-cost repayable loans and contributions through the National Housing Strategy.

The projects receiving funds from the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) are:

  • $3,076,250 - Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve - 16 new rental units

  • $1,446,600 - Zhiibaahaasgin First Nation - 5 new rental units

  • $1,372,030 - Chippewas Kettle and Stony Point - 6 new rental units

  • $1,105,970 - Long Lake No. 58 First Nation - 4 new rental units

  • $566,770 - Long Lake No. 58 First Nation - 4 new rental units

Projects receiving funds from the Apartment Construction Loan Program (ACLP) are:

  • $16,752,908 - Kenora - 56 new senior rental units

  • $16,390,000 - 276 Duke St, Dryden - 48 new rental units

  • $150,000 - Washagamis Bay First Nation - 10 rental units

The National Housing Strategy is a 10-year plan to give more than $115 billion to provide more Canadians a home.

Since December of 2024, just over $60 billion has been committed to develop more than 156,000 units and repair more than 298,000 units.

Shipyard Loses Construction Contract

The plan to build some of a new polar icebreaker here in town at the Ontario Shipyards facility (pictured above), has been put on hold.

Earlier this month the federal government announced the construction of a new heavy polar icebreaker by Seaspan Shipyard of North Vancouver.

The project cost is estimated to be $3.1 billion.

In 2020 it was announced that Seaspan and Ontario Shipyards would team up to build the first Canadian-built icebreaker in over 60 years.

However, since then things have gone cold between the two companies and now Seapsan is indicating that nothing will be made here in Thunder Bay.

Neither party, nor either MP in Thunder Bay, has commented on what transpired.

Operations at the Ontario Shipyards were suspended a year ago and temporarily restarted to make repairs to a damaged bulk carrier.

There’s no word on when operations might continue, or if the deal with Seaspan can be revived.

Crime

OPP Partners with Highschool

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has a new office in Dryden High School.

Earlier this week the Keewatin Patricia District School Board (KPDSB) announced a new partnership with the OPP.

The aim is to foster a positive relationship between youth and law enforcement.

Small communities in NWO are experiencing a rising increase in drug use and human trafficking, so the hope is this new program can help raise awareness and support for vulnerable kids.

The program has been over a year in the making.

This sounds great. I hope it’s a success!

Fishing Enforcement Will Resume

Whitefish Lake. Photo by: Austin Campbell

Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg will resume its community-led enforcement of fishing this year.

The community cited growing concerns around commercial-scale fishing on White Lake.

in 2024 the community, located between Marathon and White River, set up a series of checkpoints and patrols.

The community plans on doing the same this year, plus using the addition of drones to monitor from the air.
