Shebandowan Appeal Stalls
A small group of camp owners at Shebandowan Lake were attempting to stall the new high-voltage power line that will run through their neck of the woods.
That appeal has stalled.
They had approached the Ontario Land Tribunal to get the line moved, but the tribunal has let them know they have no jurisdiction to make a ruling.
The group wants Hydro One to reroute the Waasigan Transmission line so it doesn’t negatively impact a wetland.
The MNR granted a variance to build the line because they were satisfied with the plans to minimize damage.
The $1.2 billion project, which will transmit 350 megawatts of electricity west of Thunder Bay, has already started construction.
The camp owners plan to further appeal to a ministry regional director.
I suspect we’ll hear more about this again soon.
Daily Poll
Today’s question is:
Do you think they should re-route the hydro line because of the camp owners concerns? |

Casino Adds to City Coffers
I don’t know many people, or any at all, who enjoy going to the Thunder Bay Casino.
Most would say it’s harmed our city.
However, it does add revenue to city hall’s bottom line.
In 2024, the Gateway Casino netted city hall over $2.4 million.
The money is part of a revenue-sharing agreement from slot machines and table games that applies to all gaming/casino sites in the province.
Over the past 25 years, the casino has provided more than $55 million to our city.
Education
College Suspends Programs
Confederation College announced the suspension of 11 programs on Wednesday.
The impacted programs come from the Schools of Business, Hospitality & Media Arts, Engineering Technology, Trades and Aviation, and Health, Negahneewin and Community Services.
A suspension means the college has no plans to admit students for the foreseeable future, but it has the option to revisit the program at a future date.
The problem is declining enrollment.
Domestically, enrollment in the impacted programs has been declining for the past decade.
Internationally, the foreign student program changes have seen enrollment drop from around 45% of the fall intake, to 20-25%.
Crime
Drugs & Trafficking Charges

OPP arrested three Thunder Bay residents at a hotel in the city on Tuesday.
During the arrest, police seized $77,000 worth of drugs (crystal meth, cocaine, fentanyl, hydromorphone pill, oxycodone pills) and a Glock .45 calibre handgun with ammunition.
The arrested are 45, 40, and 38 years of age.

Morrisseau Art Fraud Presentation
The Thunder Bay police inspector who helped dismantle the Norval Morrisseau art fraud enlightened Italian officials in Ottawa the other week.
Italian law officials are concerned about the impact of illegal trafficking in art and antiquities.
Our inspector was in Ottawa on March 19th to give a presentation to the Canada-Italy symposium on crimes against cultural property.
The Morrisseau case was a years-long investigation into multiple connected fraud rings that led to numerous charges against nine people in the mult-million dollar scheme.
