Homeless Encampments
Good morning!
Welcome to the first-ever Thunder Bay Digest email newsletter.
To start we will email you at least once a week. The bigger goal is to eventually send 3 emails a week to really keep you in the know about what’s happening in Thunder Bay.
We’ve definitely got lots of plans and ideas on how we want to make this more than just a simple news email.
The plan is to have contests, give-aways, and reader driven content; because if you’re going to give us a bit of your time every week, we want to make sure it’s actually something you want to read about!
But we need readers to make that happen. Currently our biggest competitors claims over 30,000 readers. We’d love to surpass them!
So to help kick-start this thing, at the bottom of this is your opportunity to forward an invite to your friends. If you get 2 people to sign up off your invites, we’ll send you a bottle of your favourite Heartbeat Hot Sauce!

City is Finally Tackling Encampments
We’ve all seen the tents. Stacked up alongside each other on Simpson St., and near the Marina by the tracks.
It’s not a situation unique to Thunder Bay that’s for sure. And now it appears City Council is actually trying to do something about it, borrowing a model that has worked in other cities.
It’s a 10-step plan, with the focus being on creating a temporary village where up to 100 people can have access to hygiene faculties and on-site support.
This is a very tricky, and touchy, subject among Thunder Bay-ers. So while the jury is out on if this will work, at least Council is doing something about it…?

18th Annual Coats for Kids Kicks Off
Here’s a story that will make you feel warm and fuzzy (see what I did there…).
For the 18th year in a row, the Ontario English Catholic Teacher's Association is doing its coat for kids clothing drive.
Many of us are very fortunate to not have to worry about what our kids will wear to stay warm this winter. But sadly, there are so many families without that luxury.
So if you’ve got some old gear collecting dust at the back or bottom of a closet, be a good human and donate that stuff.
Items can be dropped off until Nov 7 at any Catholic board school in the city, or, at their board office on Victoria Ave.
Do it. You’ll feel better. And if it’s your thing, I’m sure Jesus will look fondly on you for it.
Crime
More Effing Drugs…
Another day, another drug bust in this city.
Anyone else getting sick of this aspect of our town?
Thunder Bay police, in partnership with OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, arrested 6 people on drugs and gun charges.
It just feels like every time one head is cut off, another 6 pop up in its place. Thanks to our police service and provincial partners, for continuing to fight this issue.
But we really need to tackle the source of the issue, not just the symptom.
Sports
Thunderwolves Swept
Just like the Maple Leafs, it wasn’t a good weekend for the Lakehead Thunderwolves Men’s hockey team.
Despite outshooting the Toronto Metropolitan University team, the Wolves were still swept this weekend.
I guess someone from Toronto has to win every now and then…
