Novemburger is Back Baby!

Ohhhh baby! Our favourite way to train for the Christmas food onslaught is back for another year: Novemburger!

(We’re going to try to have as many burgers as we can and give a review on here. But I highly encourage you to go out and support and experience this amazing gastronomical cause!)

The super cool thing is this trend (which started right here in our little ol’ city), has now spread to other United Way’s across the province.

Pretty awesome to actually have some good news about Thunder Bay spread around the country (maybe we could advocate for being the Burger Capital instead of the Unalive Capital of Canada…?)

The list of participating restaurants won’t be announced until November 1st. We’ll be sure to give a full listing next Monday.

But here are some high level stats:

  • $2 from every burger donated to United Way

  • In 5 years 54,250 burgers sold and;

  • Over $150,000 donated

Now where did I put my stretchy pants…

Respiratory Outbreaks

Tell me it’s almost winter without telling me it’s almost winter…

Cold and flu season is here to ruin your day, and the Thunder Bay Health unit is currently advising of 4 respiratory outbreaks.

Southbridge Lakehead and Wilkes Terrace Long Term Care are both dealing with facility-wide COVID-19 outbreaks.

(I know, I’m sorry. I said the C-word! It’s not me, it’s them. I’m just telling you what I was told…)

Southbridge Pinewood is dealing with an unidentified respiratory outbreak in the Hummingbird Unit while the Medically Complex Services area at St. Joseph Hospital is dealing with an Influenza A outbreak.

Here at Thunder Bay Digest we are not anti-vaxxers (but to each their own), so maybe if you have loved ones in long-term care facilities, considering getting your flu shot?

Just a thought. You do you.

Crime

Your Opinion Is… Wanted?!

Sooo… rumour has it people in Thunder Bay have opinions…?

Well, should you be one of them, it’s time to stop purely being an armchair QB and a warrior at the keyboard, and actually give some constructive feedback.

The Thunder Bay Police Service has launched a new survey with the hopes of collecting community feedback on:

  • Your views on policing priorities

  • Reasons you may have for not reporting crime

  • Providing insights on what would make you more willing to contact police

  • Rate the delivery of the TBPS services

This is your chance to shine in all your I’ve-got-a-thing-to-say-about-a-thing-or-two glory!

Don’t blow it.

Undercover Project 2024

Being a kid can be tough. But it’s especially difficult if they don’t have the simple necessities like socks and underwear.

Enter the gang at Community Clothing Assistance.

They are kicking off their 20024 Undercover Project which helps give kids in Thunder Bay access to 7 pairs of clean socks and underwear.

The program applies to kids aged 4-14.

Each year the program supports more than 1,000 kids. Just think on that for a second. Over 1,000 kids in our city don’t have access to simple clothing needs.

Bin locations for donations are in the image above. You can also click the button below for more information.

Come on Tbay - let’s do it for the kids!

Immigration

Con College Feel the Pinch

Not to get political, (but we’re going to get political for a second), but the Liberals have made a bit of a mess of the immigration situation in this country.

And now organizations like Confederation College are feeling the pinch of the whiplash approach to policy.

Love it or hate, but post-secondary instituations rely on international students for a big chunk of money.

That chunk of money helps keep tuition rates low for Canadian citizen students. (Do you want to pay more for your kids? I kinda suspect not…)

That financial bump also helps to keep critical programs going that otherwise have a hard time paying for themselves.

Colleges across Ontario are seeing an international student enrollement rate drop anywhere between 39%-79%.

I don’t have the answers. I just know it’s broken.

Ancient History

Local Tools Older Than the Pyramids

The Ontario Archeological Society recently had a symposium where they featured copper tools from the Lake Superior First Nations communities that were used 2,000 years before the Egyptian pyramids were built!

Which coincidentally is the age of some of our City Counsellors…

(I’m just joking - thank you for all Council does).

It’s pretty amazing to realize just how old our history of the region truly is and how little we are told about it. (But we sure do learn allllll about Upper and Lower Canada…).

Full tranparency: I intially included this purely for the council joke, but, this is actually really cool and we should appreciate far more the history of the First Nations and what they brought to North America. They were using copper and metulurgy before the Europeans were.
