NOSM Advocating For More Doctors
NOSM is sounding the alarm about the doctor situation in northwestern Ontario.
And they say part of the answer is to expand their capacity as a medical school.
NOSM is expecting to graduate its 1,000th doctor this May, which is in addition to the 850 that have completed residencies.
This year is the 20th cohort of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, which originally was a joint venture with Lakehead University and Laurentia Univerity, but it has since gone independent.
Despite the school's success, NWO still sees a physician shortage of 380 full-time doctors.
NOSM says to help bridge this gap the province needs to prioritize additional funding to offset the impact inflation has had on the school’s budget.
The school is also advocating for adding capacity in northern communities so students can train there. That sort of hands-on training helps to keep more graduates in the region.
Daily Poll
Does NWO need more doctors?
Wednesday’s poll asked if you thought forest fires were going to get worse…
And 51% of you thought that they would.
Today’s question:
Do you think NWO needs more doctors? |
Municipal
Carrick Street Closed
It wouldn’t be a winter in Thunder Bay without some broken water mains and/or flooded streets.
The most recent victim is Carrick Street.
Carrick is currently closed between 11th Avenue and Hewtison Street due to flooding and frozen culverts.
The Harbour Expressway is, thankfully, not affected.
At this point, the city has no idea how long they expect the road to be closed.
Sports
Scotties A Gliding Success
The Scotties finished this past weekend and it was a rousing success.
On the ice Team Homan took the win, but the big winner overall was the city.
The feedback from the skips of various teams was overwhelmingly positive. Numerous people commented on the knowledge of the crowd and the passion the city has for curling.
The tournament also had a positive economic impact.
Early estimates show that the Scotties had an impact in the neighbourhood of $7 million throughout the tournament.
Quite frankly, I think we’ll all take something that puts our city in a positive light on the national stage. And with millions of viewers on TV having taken part, we can safely say that mission was accomplished.
Nicely done organizers.

Crime Stoppers Asking for Public Support
Thunder Bay District Crime Stoppers is in need of financial donations and additional volunteers.
The money donated doesn’t just go to operational costs. It is also what allows Crime Stoppers to give out money for tips.
The organization, which is synonymous with helping solve crimes nationwide, collects all its money from donations by individuals and businesses. It receives no government funding.
Thunder Bay District Crime Stoppers has been in operation for nearly 40 years. During that time it has received more than 6,000 tips which have helped to lead to more than 3,000 arrests.

Leak Closes Library
The Thunder Bay Public Library branch at County Fair Mall had to close earlier this week due to a significant water leak.
Because of the unseasonable warm weather, snow and ice on the roof melted and pooled, eventually finding their way in due to a frozen drain and causing the mini library waterfall.
Library staff moved quickly to relocate any books in the leak area, keeping damage to a minimum.
The branch is hoping to reopen today.
Indigenous News
Over 100 Youths Attended
Over 100 youth from 49 First Nations across the Nisnawbe Aski Nation territory gathered for the Oshkaatisak Youth Council’s Annual Youth Gathering.
The gathering invited two youths from each First Nation to share their stories and to help others learn about their culture.
The goal of the conference is to help youth share experiences and learnings and to workshop on Indigenous youth leadership.
The attendees also take part in workshops on empowerment, financial literacy, and the skills needed to set youth up for success.
