Santa Came for the Dogs Too

One former Thunder Bay’er was Santa for the dogs via the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society this year.

Keanu Adduono, who is from Thunder Bay, but now lives in London, donated a year’s worth of dog food.

The donation showed up via a U-Haul and contained 3,000lbs of dog food. That equals 6,000 meals for the animals in the shelter.

Our furry friends are undoubtedly extremely thankful not having to worry about where their meals are coming from this year.

And if you’re interested in adopting a dog, please click below and check out the Humane Society’s website.

Daily Poll

It’s Shopping GO Time!

The response to Friday’s poll asking if you buy 50/50 tickets was the most resounding one yet. 95% of you purchase tickets! Thank you so much for supporting our hospital and healthcare in the north. Good luck this month!

Ok… you know I had to ask it… it’s the bottom of the ninth, bases are loaded and it’s a full count… so… are you done your shopping or are you a Dec 24th shopping masterclass?

Are you done your Christmas shopping?

Former Mayor Suing Police

Former Thunder Bay Mayor, Keith Hobbs, and his wife, Marisa, along with their co-plaintiff, Mary Voss, are suing the OPP and Thunder Bay Police in a lawsuit asking for $12.5 million.

For this needing a quick recap on this less-than-stellar-mark on Thunder Bay’s recent history:

The three plaintiffs were arrested on extortion charges in 2017. The charges were the result of an investigation that claims that the Hobb’s and Voss coerced a complainant into purchasing a house for Voss by threatening to hand over incriminating evidence to the police.

They were acquitted in 2020 following a 15-day trail.

The lawyers of the OPP and TBPS are arguing the case doesn’t meet the necessary requirements and have laid out arguments for dismissal.

The judge on the case is considering the matter and is expected to have a decision by the end of January.

As sands through the hourglass, these are the days of our lives in Thunder Bay…

Beware Scamming Phone Calls

The 50/50 draw has issued a warning to the public that scammers are calling and trying to get people to hand over their credit card numbers.

News of the attempted scams reached the Health Sciences Foundation on Friday.

The callers are identifying themselves as being a part of the 50/50 draw and are offering to have you purchase tickets and asking for your credit card number.

The Thunder Bay 50/50 draw will NEVER call asking for your credit card.

If you receive one of these calls, do not give out your credit card information, ask the caller if their mother would be proud of them, hang up, and let all your friends and family know not to fall for this!

Education

Highschool Christmas Dinner

Students in Grades 9 and 12 in Westgate, Hammarskjold and Superor Collegiate CVI received a free Christmas turkey dinner last week!

The meals were produced in partnership with Roots Community Food Centre through its Get Fresh Café program.

But the food wasn’t entirely free for the kids…

Classes from all three school helped peel 500lbs of potatoes and peel and cut 350lbs of carrots.

The produce was donated by B&B Farms. The 20, 12-kilogram, turkeys were donated by Sysco.

Roots Community Food Centre also made sure it was culturally inclusive by offering halal and vegetation options as the schools as well.

The schools selected Grade 9 and 12s as a way to welcome the new students, and to pay tribute to the students who Highschool days are nearing their end.

Any extra meals were given to students in Grades 10 and 11.

Sounds like a bunch of families have some newly trained helpers to prep Christmas dinner!

Walk Like a Penguin

As someone who almost went towards the light walking down our front steps this weekend, I highly suggest you pay attention to this write-up!

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit’s long-running Walk Like a Penguin campaign is back!

The goal is to help all of us brittle folk from preventing slips and falls during the winter months (especially right now since everything was covered with a layer of freezing rain).

The theory is simple:

Spread your feet apart, carry nothing in your arms, bend your knees, have good footwear and walk slowly on slippery surfaces.

This is especially important for seniors as 20-30% of seniors experience a fall every year.

But young people can experience injuries, including concussions, which can have life-long implications, so this method of walking is for everyone.

Click the button below for more info on the campaign.

First Nations News

Evacuees Arrive in Thunder Bay

After multiple delays, the first of the Kashechwan First Nation evacuees have arrived in Thunder Bay.

They are being evacuated due to issues with the community’s water treatment plant.

The evacuees were transported by bus to one of the hotels in the city that houses evacuees. The goal is to provide rooms that allow for family networks to stay together with multiple beds and adjoining rooms.

The repairs to the water treatment plant are anticipated to take 1-2 weeks to fix, but that could change depending on how things progress.
