Advanced Voting Stations Now Open

13 advanced voting stations have opened across the two Thunder Bay-area ridings.

The advanced locations will be open from February 20th to the 22nd. These stations, which are on top of the main returning stations that have already been open for three weeks, will be open each day from 10am until 8pm.

Elections Ontario would like to remind you that even if you haven’t registered and don’t have a voter information card (or you’ve moved and the info is no longer valid), you can present a piece of photo identification and sign a declaration that states you now live the electoral district in question.

In Thunder Bay-Superior North, there are eight advanced voting locations now open; two are located in Thunder Bay, and six are in regional communities.

Thunder Bay-Atikokan has five advanced locations, with three in Thunder Bay, one in Kakabeka, and one in Atikokan.

Find your advanced voting location by clicking the button below.

Daily Poll

Do you plan on voting in the provincial election?

On Wednesday, 71% of you felt that Hydro Once should be allowed to build the new hydro line despite the protests from the Shebandowan camp owners.

Today’s question:

Do you plan on voting early in the provincial election?

Recreation

Trail Systems Gathers Steam

If hiking is your jam (like it is mine), you’re going to like this bit of news.

There’s a major push to create a hiking trail system between Thunder Bay and surrounding communities.

And it just got a little bit longer.

The Northwestern Ontario Recreational Trails Association has upped the Kakabeka Falls section of the trail by 1km to a full length of 4km.

With that new addition, the trail system (which is also being boosted by a new trail along Thunder Bay’s Broadway Ave) brings the total trail system to date to a length of 90km.

The full goal is to have a network of trails that stretches 400km from Thunder Bay east to Nipigon, Thunder Bay to Atikokan and then south to Minnesota.

Time to lace up!

History

LU Prof Receives Honour

Lakehead University history professor, Michel Beaulieu, received the Ontario Historical Society’s highest honour, the Cruikshank Gold Medal.

Beaulieu served on the OHS board from 2013 to 2024, during which time he also held the roles of chair and president.

Among his accomplishments, Beaulieu transitioned the Ontario History Journal to an online publication, which has seen articles downloaded 540,000 times in more than 55 countries.

Beaulieu was also lauded for his volunteerism, mentorship, and work with other historical organizations.

Crime

Gunpoint Car Jacking

A pickup truck was stolen at gunpoint early on Wednesday morning.

A man approached the occupants of the parked truck in the 400 block of Memorial Ave around 5:45am.

It’s alleged the man brandished a firearm while stealing the vehicle.

Police quickly located the truck, but abandoned the pursuit for public safety due to high speeds.

Later that day police recovered the vehicle but the investigation continues and they are asking anyone with information to call.

Education

Heat Mapping Occured In The Summer

Confederation College researchers partnered with the city to map out precise temperature readings throughout the summer months.

The data and subsequent analysis will be used to help guide how the city plans the construction of new public spaces.

The research, which took place between July 26 and September 18, used instruments that measured temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, barometric pressure, heat stress index, dewpoint, and canopy cover.

Measurements were taken at 276 locations across the city.

The goal was to map out the city’s head island, which are areas of concentrated higher temperatures caused by the heat retention and radiation of asphalt, concrete and other building materials.

First Nation Expands Food Supply Chain

Marten Falls First Nation has further invested in the food supply chain for Northern Ontario.

During last week’s Neegan-Iishawin conference, Chief Bruce Achneepineskum announced that Marten Falls First Nation has finalized its purchase of Cav-Tal Foods Ltd.

This comes on the heels of the community purchasing a 51% stake in Bay Meats last year.

Cav-Tal Foods Ltd is a bulk food distribution company that supplies major grocers like Safeway and Metro, along with restaurants, and institutions.

Marten Falls has said they will retain all existing staff, but look forward to opening the door to their members for future opportunities.
