Curling Shuttle Service

In a city with, say we shall, challenging public transit, it’s welcome news that the 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts will provide shuttle service to and from the venue.

While the details are still being worked out, the goal is to have established pick-up and drop-off zones located at local hotels and easy-to-park and gather areas.

(We all know that you may as well burn it down when it’s difficult to park somewhere in this city…)

The shuttle will be provided free-of-charge, with funding coming from Community Economic Development Committee and the city’s economic development grant.

The event runs from February 13 to February 23 at the Fort William Gardens.

No Stigma November

Student Health & Wellness at Lakehead University is celebrating No Stigma November.

The goal of the initiative is to remove the stigma around mental health and normalize the seeking of help.

LU has posted a number of different sources for students and employees to help either access mental health support or to help those who might be struggling.

You can click below to see a list of what is available.

Again, no jokes or sarcasm here. I think the normalizing of seeking help for mental health concerns is so important I’m just happy to spread continuous awareness on this important issue.

Crime

Board Members Needed

The Thunder Bay Police Services Board is seeking two new members to join the governance committee.

The previous members terms had expired. So nothing fishy there…

The mandate of the governance committee includes:

  • Policy review & development

  • Recruitment of board members

  • Development and education of board members

  • Recruitment of administrative officers of the board

  • Recruitment of the Chief of Police and Deputy Chief

Something Doesn’t Smell Right

OK, back to our regularly scheduled programming of a bit of sarcasm.

In case you needed reason # 529 to not swim in the Neebing River….

On Friday people started reporting a bad smell in the area of Arthur and James St.

And with good reason:

There was a grease blockage in the sanitary sewer on Arthur St. It caused an overflow that allowed sewage to enter the storm drain system which then drained in to the Neebing River.

🤢

I guess that as the Thunder Bay Fatburg??

City crews continue to work on it, but with the recent rain there is currently no clear timeline for completion.

Water Distribution and Waste Water Collection Superintendent David Warwick said he doesn’t believe the contamination is a risk to anyone.

Still probably seems like a good idea to maybe not stay in a van down by the river for the foreseeable future…

Mining

High-Grade Thunder Bay Zones

In what sounds like good news, but also comes across as mostly Greek to me, Clean Air Metals is preparing to do follow-up drilling for what it calls high-grade targets in it’s Thunder Bay location.

There’s a lot of mining mumbo-jumbo talk but it looks like they found sulphite, platinum, palladium, copper, nickel,

At this point you may not want to take my word for any of this, and it’s totally possible I am misunderstanding, but it sounds like the aim is to increase production at this facility.

But maybe click the link below to read their press release and form your own thoughts and opinions on this news.

But hey, any time mining wants to find new stuff and create more work, we’re all for it here at Thunder Bay Digest!

Residential School Monument Contest

Wiikwemkoong Toursim and its community partners are launching a nation-wide contest to create a monument to recognize the atrocities of residential school system.

The theme for the design is ‘Empowering the Anishinaabe in the Child.’

The contest is open to all Indigenous people across Canada.

Submissions are due by November 15, 2024, at 11:59pm.

The winning design will receive $3,000 and will be used to create a custom metal work installation of the design at Wiikwemkoong.

How cool would it be if a Thunder Bay artist submitted the winning design?!
