The City is Growing… Sorta?
On Wednesday night the City Manager, John Collin, said he would like to see the city’s population grow by 3% per year, to keep up with inflationary pressures.
Sounds good. Makes sense.
The problem?
In the past decade our tax-base growth has been 0.66% per year.
For comparison, the inflation rate during that same 10 year period was 32%.
Now I kinda did pretty poorly in highschool math, but, even my numerically challenged mind can see that if city costs have ballooned by 34%, but tax base increases have amount to only 7%, we’re running what the fancy numbers people call a deficit.
Who here wants to pay higher property and business taxes to make up the difference….? Anyone…? No one….?
Right.
Hopefully there’s a plan in place to increase economic, and thus population, growth…

Pumpkin Composting

Hopefully all the kids (and some not-so-kid-aged) trick-or-treaters, had a fun, safe, time last night.
And godspeed to the parents today dealing with sugar crashes and rage.
*high-five to those parents with joint custody situations who didn’t have their kids this Halloween and don’t have to deal with the sugar situation…*
The other thing to deal with now is what to do with those Michaelangelo-esque pumpkins you spent so much careful time carving and slopping seeds and pumpking guts all over your kitchen.
Thankfully the city has you covered!
You can unceremoniously (or with ceremony if it meant a lot to you), dump your work of arts in one of 3 pumpkin-pick-up spots:
Westfort Playfield - Neebing Avenue
Intercity Shopping Centre overflow parking, across Fort William Road
County Fair Plaza
Cool fact that I didn’t know: the city takes those and diverst them from the landfill into the compost section. And every spring we as tax-paying (see above) citizens of Thunder Bay can go and pick up some free compost!
You can click the More Info button but I legit put all the things you need to know in this post. But, if you want to spend some time familiarizing yourself with our city’s waste mangement information, knock yourselves out below.
Crime
Guess What…
Yeeeeaaaahhhh another day and another drug bust.
Part of me is wondering why I post the crime section.
But then I think, it’s probably important we continue to discuss the ongoing situation in our city so that maybe one day we can start tackling the root causes of this.
And to remind people to vigilant.
Soap box done:
Wednesday morning Thunder Bay Police Service's Intelligence Unit, with assistance from the Emergency Task Unit and Ontario Provincial Police's Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, enacted a search warrant on a Tupper Street residence and:
2 males arreseted (both from Brampton)
Cocaine & fentanyl sized estimated to be worth $470,000
2 loaded hand guns siezed
Extra details below. Stay safe everyone!

Cardiac Care Meets Art Auction

The Hospital Foundation is putting on a brand new event for the Cardiac Care Fund called Resolute Hearts Around the World.
It’s a cool sounding event:
Taking place at Fort William Historical Park on November 2, the meal is a five-course dinner with complimentary wine pairings from around the world.
The event will feature a number of auctions, including exclusive vacation trips to Costa Rica, Mexico, a Cruise of your choice, Panama, Switzerland and Italy.
(Tell me your target market for this event is aging wealthy boomers without telling me it’s aging wealthy boomers…)
Ok but to get back to the main point! One of the items auctioned off will be that lovely looking painting up above, by local artist Caterina Tolone.
It is entitled ‘Paris’ and is 5 feet by 3 feet and is inspired by Caterina’s travels around the world.
All joking aside, this sounds like an amazing event supporting the type of care that will only become more needed. (Go for walks people!)
Apparently it is almost sold out, but you can click the link below to try and get some tickets and support the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

This Wind Feels Familiar
I swear this story sounds familiar…
EDF Renewables is snooping around the rural areas of Thunder Bay, prepping to ask residents if they’d be ok with a new windfarm.
I have a guess how this might go…
While still in it’s infancy, the plan is to erect some 35 to 40 modern (as opposed to old-school Dutch style?) windmills.
They would produce 200 megawatts of electricity.
They may also produce 2,000+ mega-angry people…
Good luck to EDF, may the odds be ever in their favour!

Reading Signs is Hard
I can’t even with this one…
The Thunder Bay Airport is eliminating the the short-term parking lot.
It will now be just one big parking lot, charging $2/hour and a maximum of $20/day.
Gone also is the free-parking for 20 minutes while you quickly pick up your arriving passengers. Now you’ll pay $1 for the first half-hour.
The reason for this change?
Too many people parked in the short-term lot thinking it was the long-term lot and complained about their parking charges.
😳
I guess reading pretty clearly marked signs is hard.
(Also did you really think you scored that great a spot, that close to the airport, in long-term…? 🤣)
