The City Wants to Loan You Money

The City of Thunder Bay wants you to upgrade your house so it’s more efficient, and they’ll even loan you the money to do it!

But, before you get too excited planning all your home renovations… the city is (drum roll please) conducting a survey!

The City would like your input on what sorts of things should be covered under the home loan program.

This isn’t out the blue, it’s just a long time-line (as most things government-related are).

The city did a feasibility study two years ago on this issue and it was determined the city could drastically reduce it’s emissions with a retrograde program.

The city has a goal of being net-zero emissions by 2050.

The survey is anonymous and open until January 31, 2025. Click the link below for more information and to fill out the survey.

Daily Poll

Eggnog - love it or hate it?

Mondays’ poll was super close! But real trees won out with 53% of the vote.

Next up… eggnog (or, chicken milk if you translate directly from French)

Do you have to have it or do you never want to see it, let me know!

Health

Nuclear Crash Response Plan

Now that Ignace has been selected to house nuclear waste, the mitigation is starting!

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has said part of the project is a 7-days-a-week, 24-hours-a-day, transportation control center.

They will be constantly monitoring any nuclear waste being shipped, and will oversee any emergency responses.

The rods are likely to be shipped via truck, but could also be shipped via rail. Regardless of the method, they will be placed in containers designed to withstand fire, hard impacts, and immersion in water.

Firefighters are still leery, especially the smaller rural volunteer forces that will not be trained or equipped to handle this kind of cargo.

And especially given the errr… unfortunate crash-prone tendency of some truck drivers these days.

The arguing and complaining is set to continue. And for quite some time!

It’s not anticipated any rods will be stored for at least another 20 years.

Fire

Fire Marshall Investigation

There was a devastating explosion and subsequent fire at a home on Crown Street that saw the complete destruction of the house.

Three people required treatment from the incident.

The fire burned intensely due to a natural gas leak that helped fuel it.

So now an investigator is en-route from the Office of the Fire Marshall to figure out what the hell happened here.

It’s going to take some time, however. There is significant debris that needs to be sorted through and hot spots were still flaring up earlier in the week.

As a result, the Fire Department issued a press release reminding everyone to properly maintain their natural gas appliances.

I’d say so…

Roads

Northwest Arterial Roadway Feedback

So if that headline means nothing to you, don’t worry, I had no clue either when I started reading.

But!

The City of Thunder Bay wants even MORE feedback from you, this time on the Northwest Arterial roadway.

To bring you up to speed with my slow self, this is a proposed 3.7km stretch of road that will provide a connection in the northwest part of the city connecting Dawson to John St and beyond.

It will be 4 lanes, including sidewalks, gutters, active transportation paths, and a bridge over the McIntyre.

This is actually kind of ancient news. The original environmental assessment was done in 1989. So this is a follow-up to that in order to make sure the results are still valid.

What’s more exciting, is that the city has confirmed this is being done in conjunction with the MTO because the plan is to eventually divide the Thunder Bay Expressway, create new interchanges, and remove highway access at John and Oliver.

That would be long overdue!

Charity

New 50/50

There’s a new 50/50 in town!

The Thunder Bay Public Library has launched their own 50/50, throwing down the gauntlet to the Hospital Foundation!

Proceeds from the draw will go towards supporting library services.

Libraries don’t get the props they deserve for the services they provide.

5,000 people pass through Thunder Bay libraries every week!

You can buy your ticket by clicking below, or visiting any branch in-person.
