ISSUE #11
Happy Wednesday!
So this intro isn’t so much about Tbay news, as it is Tbay culture. But since it’s my newsletter, Imma do what I want 😂.
I'm an immigrant to Thunder Bay, having moved up here at the end of 2007. In all that time, listening to local rock radio, I can't believe how deep the love for the song Copperhead Road goes.
Granted, it's a great tune. But in S. Ont, that isn't really played very much... at all...
Well let me tell you something... I've found the collab you didn't know you needed!
Nickleback (you're either a fan or a liar, we all know this), just released a live album from Nashville and cover Copperhead Road with Brantley Gilbert and Josh Ross, and it's ahhhhmaaaazing.
Click here to listen/watch on Apple Music, Spotify, and here for YouTube.
You're welcome.
In todays issues we cover:

Nuclear Decision on Hold
We’ve all seen the anti nuclear waste signs in yards around Thunder Bay and beyond.
It pertains to the potential decision to store, extremely deeply underground, spent nuclear fuel rods either west of Ignace, or in Southern Ontario near an existing nuclear power facility.
Part of that includes the transportation of those rods (obviously). That also provides the opportunity for hiccups to the process.
Enter Oliver Paipoonge.
Their Council will hold off (for now) on proposing a potential resolution that would oppose the transportation of spent rods through their Municipality.
10 First Nations and municipalities have already adopted resolutions opposing the transportation of the materials.
According to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, there has never been an accident in Canada transporting spent nuclear fuel that has led to serious injuries, overexposures, fatalities, or significant environmental consequences.
We’re only going to need more power in the years ahead. So what do you think? Should we allow the disposal of the rods in NWO?
Are you ok storing nuclear fuel in NWO? |
Charity
Dancing with the Docs
This Saturday (Nov 23), is the second iteration of the fundraiser, Dancing with the Docs.
What might Doctors be dancing for you ask?
Other than pride and bragging rights (they are a competitive bunch…), the event is a fundraiser for the Clinical Lab at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, supporting cancer care.
All funds raised stay in NWO.
Doctors are partnered up and will each perform a competitive dance number (on top of a group number).
There are auction items available along with a 50/50 and the ability to help pick the winning pair.
If you want to donate to the cause, or possibly see if tickets to attend are still available, click the link below. You can see event info and get bios on all the participants (and see more of your own doctors face than just the eyes because of the mask and scrub cap!).
Personally, I am biased and would recommend this pair to receive any generous donations you may feel inclined to provide 😍
Crime
Councillor Charged with Assault
Councillor Trevor Gieurtuga has stated he is facing an assault charge after an altercation with a brother back in June.
Gieurtuga denies any wrong doing and believes he’ll be vindicated once he has his day in court.
He stated that in the vein of transparency he wanted to let the public know.
The matter will be heard next week in court.
As the saying goes, you can’t pick your family…
Health
Local Research = Worldwide Impact
The new Cancer Therapeutic and Diagnostic Research Northwestern Ontario (CANCARE NWO) research group only formed a few months ago but they already have several studies under way.
What makes this group unique in NWO, is that it combines both physicians and scientists while conducting research.
Currently there are multiple studies underway targeting breast cancer.
Specifically, triple negative breast cancer, which is the most aggressive subtype of breast cancer.
The research is also being conducted in conjunction with Laurentian University and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.
It’s great to see Thunder Bay being involved in such important work.
Click the link below to read more. I promise it’s actually not full of medical mumbo-jumbo in its write-up and pretty easy to understand.
First Nations News
First Nation Flag Flies at Alstom
The flag of the Fort William First Nation now flies at the Alstom plant on Montreal Road.
It was a joint decision by Local 1075 and management (although to be fair, the Local 1075 President was the one who was raising the issue at meetings).
Alstom and Local 1075 say this is a public acknowledgement of the reconciliation they are attempting to do.
Chief of Fort William First Nation, Michelle Solomon, says this is a good step to opening the door for further community engagement, and to work to reconcile the past.
Both Solomon and Alstom/Local 1075 are optimistic this not only will increase community awareness, but will also allow for more Fort William First Nation members to be made aware of potential job opportunities.
I’d say that’s a good news story all around!
Local Sports
Correction
On Monday I stated the incorrect outcome of the Senior Boys Volleyball results.
So….
Congratulations to Hammarskjold, which beat St. Ignatius 3-0, to claim the Senior Boys Volleyball crown in Thunder Bay.
