Trumps Impact on Local Economy
The President of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, Charla Robinson, says there could be reasons to be concerned about what the 47th President might do, policy-wise, and the impact it could have on Thunder Bay.
The main issue is increased protectionism by way of additional tarrifs on exported products.
Specifically, softwood lumber.
Which quite frankly, is not an industry here that has shown a lot of, shall we say, robustness, when it comes to absorbing financial shocks.
Additionally, NAFTA is up for renegotiation in 2026.
Time will tell how this will all play out for our little corner of Canada.
(You had to know a Trump post was inbound sooner rather than later… now if only it was our turn to go to the polls…)

Vive la Gym!
The Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales (CSDCAB - damn that’s a mouthfull…) is getting a new gymnasium.
The extension will be added on to La Vérendrye on High St.
The school actually functions as two schools within one.
Grades 7-8 take place in one section of the school while 9-12s are in another.
The extension will be providing a gymnasium primarily for the 7-8s. It won’t only be athlethics focused, however, as a new stage will be built as well for presentations etc (which currently takes place in the cafeteria).
The project is being funded jointly by the school board and the Ministry of Education to the tune of $5,306,509.
C’est bon! (or something like that - it’s been a minute since I studied French…)

Christmas Hampers for Seniors, Singles, Couples
Before some start complaining over a Christmas story already:
A) it’s not too early to start thinking about Christmas and;
B) this is for a good cause to help those less forutnate, so suck it up!
The RFDA is back again this year with their Christmas hampers full of food for seniors, singles, and couples who are childless.
The goal of this initiative is to cover off those in need who do not qualify for the RFDAs Christmas Cheer program.
Those in need can reach out via 211 before November 25 and request a hamper.
So now I’m calling on Thunder Bay Digest readers to not be cheap and if you can, please help donate some food items.
Volunteers from local community organizations will be accepting donations for the hampers at No Frills, County Fair Plaza, on Saturday, November 9 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and at Metro, River Street, on Saturday, November 23, from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
The goal is to make healthy choices…
The RFDA is asking for cereal, oatmeal, Kraft Dinner, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, canned soups, canned vegetables, canned fruit, pancake syrup, pancake sauce, pancake mix, stove top stuffing, boxes of potatoes, as well as fresh potatoes.
They throw in fresh fruits and veggies just before hamper delivery to ensure freshness.
Time to consider getting into the Christmas spirit!
Municipal Government
Neebing Wants Your Input
The metroplis of Neebing wants your input (if you live there that is) about it’s municipal plan for the next four years.
A public meeting is set at the Blake Hall on November 27th at 6:00pm.
The goal is to gather ideas and brainstorm around what the municipality should focus on for the next four years.
Neebing is encountering challenges, specifically around its aging population. (As someone who is closing in on 46, the next sentence is going to pain me…):
With a median resident age of 48, it makes the average resident older than the rest of Ontario 😭

The Nishsawbe Aski Police Services Board has fired police chief, Roland Morrison.
Morrison was suspended with pay on March 7th, but subsequently terminated following an indepdent investigation.
No reason behind the termination was given.
NAPS serves 34 communities across Northern Ontario.
It is the largest First Nations police service in Canada, and the second largest in North America (that’s really cool!).
Terry Armstrong (former Police Chief) is currently serving as the interim Police Chief while the board pursues a replacement strategy.
