News
Provincial Election Coming
So I know this isn’t purely Thunder Bay news, but, it does have the potential to impact our city. And it’s definitely a piece in the larger puzzle with what is currently happening in Ottawa and D.C.
So with that preamble out of the way…
It’s looking like Premier Doug Ford will be calling a provincial election on Wednesday.
The anticipated election date would be 28 days after it is called.
And in a weird quirk of election law, it must be called on a Wednesday 🤷♂️
Ford says he is doing it to receive a strong mandate from the people of Ontario. The opposition leaders are calling a bit of BS, saying Ford already enjoys a majority in parliament.
They claim he is doing it to distract Ontarians from other issues such as the strained healthcare system.
It’s going to be a hell of a year in Canadian politics!
Daily Poll
Who are you voting for?
Wednesday was unanimous! 95% of you want to see more trees in Thunder Bay! (I agree with you!)
Today’s question:
Who do you plan on voting for in the provincial election? |
Politics
Local MPs Endorse Carney
The current political climate in North America is a rollercoaster ride, to say the least.
As anyone who doesn’t live under a rock knows, our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has said he will step down from his role as PM once the Liberal Party has elected a new leader.
So it’s time for knives out across Canada as everyone jockeys for favour and Liberal Party votes.
Thunder Bay has two MPs, Marcus Powlowski, representing Thunder Bay-Rainy River, and Patty Hajdu, representing Thunder Bay-Superior North.
Both have now come out in support of PM candidate, Mark Carney.
Carney is a bit of a political outsider, having spent time in private business and as the Bank of Canada governor.
He’s making the pitch that his real-world, not just political world, experience differentiates him from the others.
The field is now closed to nominations, with Chandra Arya, Jaime Battiste, Frank Baylis, Ruby Dhalla, Chrystia Freeland and Karina Gould joining Carney.
Liberal party members will vote for a new leader on March 9.
Godspeed Liberal Party - it certainly can’t get much worse for them!
Police
Family Asking for Help to Locate Missing Person
Adrienne Towegishig has been missing since January 10th, and her family is renewing please for help in locating her.
Towegishig has eight children at home, aged between 2 and 18 years of age. She is believed to be somewhere in Thunder Bay.
Her family is concerned that she is not missing of her own free will.
Towegishig is described as 5’5” tall, with a medium build, long dark brown hair, and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a long dark parka and dark combat boots.
If anyone knows where she is, they are encouraged to call 911. If you have information that could help locate Towegishig, you can also contact the OPP non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Municipal
ROMA Conference Concludes
Thunder Bay’s delegation has returned from the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference.
And while nothing was promised to the area, the delegation came back feeling good about the future.
Throughout the three day conference, our delegates met with five Ministers and seven Ministries overall.
The city’s focus during these talks was homelessness and addictions, two things that hit the north especially hard.
Additional topics covered included policing and energy infrastructure, and while no money was promised, the delegation stated the talks were constructive and could lead to funding in the near future.
Entertainment
Symphony Targets Under 35s
I suspect it is fair to say that in today’s age of everything instantly available, and attention spans at an all-time shortness level, most younger people are not looking at the symphony as something fun to do.
Well….
The TBSO thinks they’re wrong and are going to try and change the minds of the young’ins!
Starting February 1st, and running through to the 28th, people under 35 can register with the TBSO. That registration will then allow them to purchase tickets at half-price for the remainder of the TBSO’s season (Feb 1 - May 2).
The goal is to expand the reach of the fine arts and hook the next generation of symphony fans.
Indigenous News
Feathers of Hope Feedback
50 Indigenous young people had the opportunity to give their feedback on how Canada is adopting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The event took place at the Valhalla Inn late last week.
The Government of Canada’s 2023-2028 Action Plan covers 180 measures to implement the principles of the U.N. declaration.
Feathers of Hope, a local Indigenous youth-led not-for-profit, held the session with the youth. The participants were given a detailed overview of the U.N. declaration and how it applies to them, as well as Canada’s action plan.
They will also work in groups to form recommendations and responses to the plan, which will be turned into a report to be submitted to the federal Department of Justice.
