When 911 Calls You
Here’s a clever one:
Scammers have spoofed the local RCMP number, and are using it to call residents.
It’s not every day when 911 calls you! But when it does, you may want to consider hanging up.
The scammers are calling and attempting to use the number to intimidate and defraud people.
The RCMP has stated that they will never call anyone asking for money, or personal information.
I’m sure they can get all that just fine on their own!
And I learned today, that while the RCMP isn’t the main police force in Ontario, they are in Thunder Bay to help enforce federal laws pertaining to national security, border laws and cybercrime.
I guess they need to add low-tech Ma-Bell crimes to their list…

What Do You Think of the Roads?
The City has release the proposed 2025 capital budget.
And if any of you wonderful Thunder Bay Digest readers have an opinion on how they should be spending your provided tax dollars on that budget (here’s looking at, well, everyone…), am I going to make your day with the next sentence!
The City of Thunder Bay actually wants your input on how they should be spending that budget!
No guarantee they’ll listen to a word you say.
But, you do get the chance to help shape the next fiscal year and provide guidance on where the city should be spending on key infrastructure from road repairs to facility upgrades.
(Pretty sure they could blow the whole budget on roads and we’d still have a high dissatisfaction rate at the state of them…).
Sarcasm aside, if we don’t participate in the process we can’t complain (or shouldn’t anyhow...). So take a moment to click below and take part in your civic process.
Crime
Trucks Don’t Float

So good news, not a drug bust story!
But a cautionary tale in the flotation properties of motor vehicles.
On the afternoon of October 31 (mercifully before trick or treating really got underway), police arrested a woman after she drove a truck into Lake Superior.
Officers were alerted to a stolen truck in the area of Clavet St.
When the showed up they discovered it had very much taken a wrong turn and was sitting partially submerged in the lake.
The police arrested the woman on-site.
She was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, mischief over $5,000 and impaired operation of a motor vehicle (that’s the scary one with the kids almost out and about).

Shine the Light on Woman Abuse
City of Thunder Bay Mayor, Ken Boschcoff, has declared the month of November to be the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse month.
Consider the following horrific stats:
In the past 12 months the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses has reported over 46 femicides
Thunder Bay has one of the highest rates of intimate partner violence per capita in the country
In 2023 in Ontario, on average, a woman or child was killed every 7 days by a man known to them
There’s no jokes here. No sarcasm in this post. Violence is abhorrent.
If you know someone who is in danger, but you don’t know how to help, click the link below.
I’ve linked to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre sexual assault/domestic violence treatment centre page.
It has a ton of resources and information.
You may save a life.

The participating restaurants in this year’s Novemburger have been announced.
And the turnout is enormous.
I know I said we’d review the burgers and write about them here, but I gotta be honest….
We can’t eat that many burgers in a month!
So we’ll do the best we can to give feedback on as many as we can.
